"I swear to keep the laws of Romania, to defend the rights and territorial integrity"- spoke in Bucharest, Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, on 10 May 1866.Until the communists came to power, May 10th was National Day of Romania.
Was also called the "Triple Crown Day" being related to three crucial events in modern history of the country:on May 10, 1866, Carol I of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen arrived in Bucharest and oath before Parliament; 10 May 1877 Carol I proclaimed Independence of Romania, 10 May 1881, Romania was proclaimed a kingdom, Carol I became the first king of the country.
After 1947, in an attempt to remove any trace of the monarchy in the country's history Communists have moved the celebration of independence on May 9 and was proclaimed a new National Day on August 23.
Now, the Romanian National Day is December 1, celebrating the union of all Romanian provinces in 1918 during the reign of King Ferdinand who was crowned King of all Romanians in the historic town of Alba Iulia, in 1922.
